What to Expect at Your First TCM Consultation
A first visit to a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic looks quite different from a typical Western medical appointment. Most first consultations take 30 to 60 minutes, longer than a typical follow-up, because the practitioner is building a full picture of your health before recommending anything.
The intake
Expect to be asked about more than just the specific complaint that brought you in: sleep, appetite, digestion, stress levels, and menstrual cycle (where relevant) are all standard questions. TCM treats the body as an interconnected system, so a headache and poor sleep might be discussed as related, not separately.
The four diagnostic methods
Practitioners traditionally draw on four types of observation: looking (including at the tongue, its colour, coating, and shape are all noted), listening and smelling, asking about your history and symptoms, and touch, most often a pulse reading at the wrist that can take a minute or two per side.
What treatment looks like
Depending on the clinic and your condition, a first session might include acupuncture, cupping, Tui Na massage, or a herbal prescription to take away with you, or some combination. It's common not to receive active treatment on the very first visit if the practitioner wants to observe your response to an initial, lighter approach first.
Before you go
Most clinics ask you to eat a light meal beforehand (not on a completely empty stomach), avoid wearing dark lipstick or nail polish on the day (it can obscure tongue and nail diagnosis), and bring a list of any medications or supplements you're currently taking.
